As part of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture has been used for thousands of years. Tiny needle pricks in certain parts of the body alleviate pain, inflammation or disorders.
Acupuncture is based on the concept that there is an energy network throughout the body. Illnesses, injuries or an unhealthy lifestyle can block the flow of energy, called qi. Inserting needles in important acupuncture points of the body release blockages and restore the flow of energy.
When the needles penetrate tissue, they trigger a response by promoting local circulation and stimulating the whole autonomic nervous system. This in turn affects the release of neuronal and hormonal neurotransmitters. The discomfort of the needle prick has a positive, regulating effect on both the psyche and the body.
Acupuncture can be used to treat a long list of conditions which is by no means exhaustive. In particular, acupuncture is now widely recognised as a method of pain relief. Its effectiveness has been proven in a large number of studies. Acupuncture is also believed to work at the psychological level, alleviate inflammation and promote relaxation.
